Overview
Contra’s central promise is that it does not take a percentage commission from independent earnings. The Free plan supports profiles, proposals and payments, while Pro costs $29 per month or $199 per year and waives Contra platform fees that otherwise apply to payments. Third-party payment processing still applies, and clients can face method-dependent card/ACH/SEPA/crypto processing costs. The platform is especially compelling for independents who bring their own clients as well as those seeking work through Contra’s discovery network.
The key distinction from many legacy freelance marketplaces is its commission model. Contra states that creatives remain commission-free: it does not take a percentage of the independent’s quoted earnings. On the Free plan, however, platform fees apply to qualifying payments and are capped at $29. Contra Pro removes those platform fees and adds features such as boosted discoverability, faster payouts and portfolio/brand enhancements.
Payment processing is separate. Contra’s current help documentation lists card, ACH, SEPA, Contra Wallet and crypto processing structures with different percentages and caps. This means 'commission-free' should not be read as 'every payment is completely fee-free.'
Key features
- Portfolio-led professional profiles and discovery rather than only bid-based job listings.
- Proposals, contracts, projects and one-off invoices in one independent-work system.
- 0% percentage commission on independent earnings.

- Job opportunities and talent discovery for both independents and hiring clients.
Pricing and fees
| Fee / plan | Current amount | What matters |
|---|---|---|
| Independent Free | $0/month | Core profile, opportunities and payment tools; payment platform fees still apply. |
| Contra Pro | $29/month or $199/year | Waives Contra platform fees and adds stronger discoverability, payout and portfolio features. |
| Free-plan platform fee | $15 or $29/payment | $15 for $1-$499; $29 for $500+ based on Contra’s current fee overview. |
| Card processing | Typically 2.9% + $0.30 domestic | Additional charges can apply for manually entered, international or currency-converted card payments. |
| ACH processing | 0.8%, capped at $5 | Availability is subject to eligibility/request. |
| SEPA processing | 0.5% + $0.30, capped at $6 | Current help documentation includes currency-conversion treatment. |
Contra’s 'commission-free' claim refers to percentage commission on independent earnings. Platform fees on the Free plan and third-party payment-processing fees are separate. Fee responsibility can also vary by transaction type and configuration.
Pros and cons
Pros
- No percentage commission on freelancer earnings is a major advantage for higher-value independent work.
- Pro’s $199 annual price can be economical for professionals processing regular client payments.
- Strong modern portfolio presentation and personal-brand orientation.
- Useful both for finding work and for managing clients sourced outside the platform.
- Contracts, invoices and payments reduce the need for separate operational tools.
Cons
- Free-plan transactions are not entirely free because platform and processing fees can still apply.
- Fee structure has multiple layers and payment-method rules that need careful reading.
- Smaller talent marketplace than some long-established global platforms.
- Clients seeking the lowest-cost mass bidding environment may prefer open marketplaces.
Who is it for?
Who should use Contra?
Contra is especially strong for experienced independents who already have a personal brand or client pipeline and want payment infrastructure without giving up 10%-20% of every project. Pro becomes easier to justify as payment volume increases because its flat subscription removes Contra’s platform fees.
Who should consider an alternative?
Choose a broader open marketplace if your primary goal is access to the largest possible pool of low-cost bids. Clients seeking tightly vetted premium talent may prefer Toptal, while design-only hiring may be better served by 99designs.
ToolRankers verdict
Contra’s economics are its biggest differentiator. A freelancer who bills meaningful project values can often prefer a flat Pro subscription to a marketplace that takes a recurring percentage of every invoice.
The important qualification is that commission-free does not mean cost-free. Payment processing and some platform fees still exist, particularly on Free. Even so, Contra is one of the most attractive options for independents who want to own their client relationships and keep more of their quoted revenue.
